Getting Started (Ages & Programs)

What age can my child start playing soccer at KC Legends?

KC Legends welcomes players starting at age 2 through our HappyFeet program, which is designed specifically for toddlers and preschoolers ages 2–5. From there, players can progress through Jr. Legends (kindergarten through 2nd grade), recreational leagues (age 7+), 4v4 developmental leagues (ages 5–18), and eventually competitive Club Premiere or Elite64 teams (U8–U19). There is a program suited for every age and every stage of development.

What is HappyFeet and how is it different from other toddler soccer programs?

HappyFeet is a nationally recognized early childhood soccer curriculum developed for ages 2–5. Unlike programs that simply let young children kick a ball around, HappyFeet uses structured games that develop motor skills, body coordination, listening, and a genuine love of the ball — all within a joyful, non-competitive environment. Every session is coach-led with a consistent curriculum, and parents participate alongside their child. HappyFeet has been KC Legends' foundational entry program for over 35 years.

What programs are available for kids ages 5–8?

For players in the 5–8 age range, KC Legends offers three core options: (1) HappyFeet for ages 5 who are not yet in kindergarten, focused on foundational ball skills; (2) Jr. Legends for kindergarten through 2nd grade, which bridges fun play and beginning skill instruction; and (3) 4v4 small-sided leagues starting at age 5, which give players their first taste of team play in a low-pressure setting. By age 7, recreational league registration opens as well.

How do I know if my child is ready for competitive soccer?

Readiness for competitive soccer typically shows up around U10–U12, when players have internalized basic technical skills (trapping, passing, first touch) and demonstrate a desire to train harder and compete more seriously. KC Legends coaches observe players during recreational and 4v4 programs and can advise families on timing. There is no rush — research consistently shows that early specialization before age 12 increases burnout and injury risk. Our pathway is designed to let players arrive at competition naturally.

What is the difference between recreational and club soccer?

Recreational soccer is community-based, lower cost, and focused on participation and fun — ideal for players still exploring the sport. Club soccer (like KC Legends' Club Premiere or Elite64) involves tryouts, year-round training, certified coaches, travel to tournaments, and a structured development curriculum. Club players practice 2–4 times per week and compete regionally or nationally. The investment in time and money is higher, but so is the development return. Many KC Legends families start in rec and transition to club when the player is ready.

What is 4v4 soccer and why is it good for young players?

4v4 soccer is a small-sided format played with four players per team on a small field. Research from U.S. Soccer and FIFA recommends small-sided formats for players under 10 because they create far more individual touches, decisions, and goal-scoring opportunities per player than 11v11. In a typical 4v4 game, a young player may touch the ball 30–40 times versus only 5–8 times in an 11v11 match. KC Legends' 4v4 leagues run for players ages 5–18 and serve as both a development tool and a standalone recreational option.

The KC Legends Pathway

What is the KC Legends player development pathway?

The KC Legends pathway spans from age 2 to age 19 across six stages: HappyFeet (2–5) → Jr. Legends (K–2nd grade) → Recreational or 4v4 Leagues (ages 5–10) → Club Premiere (U8–U19, competitive) → Legends Elite64 (U10–U19, highest level) → College & Beyond. Each stage is designed to build on the last, ensuring players arrive at each new level technically and emotionally ready. The pathway has produced 400+ college alumni and over $8.8 million in college scholarships since 1989.

How does a player move from recreational to competitive?

The typical path is recreational or 4v4 league play (ages 7–10) → Club Premiere tryouts (U10–U12). Players attend an annual KC Legends tryout, where coaches evaluate technical skill, athleticism, coachability, and competitive drive. There is no automatic promotion — every placement is earned. Some players go directly from 4v4 leagues to the highest competitive level; others spend one to two seasons in Club Premiere before advancing. Our staff is always available to discuss a specific player's readiness.

What is box soccer and how does it help players improve?

Box soccer (also called futsal or indoor small-sided soccer) is played on a hard surface inside a box or court with small goals and no walls to use. The confined space forces players to improve their first touch, dribbling technique, and decision-making speed because there is no room for error. KC Legends integrates box soccer into training at its indoor facility in Merriam, KS. Studies show that players who train with futsal-style methods develop superior technical skills 20–30% faster than outdoor-only players.

How many KC Legends alumni have played college soccer?

More than 400 KC Legends alumni have gone on to play college soccer since the club was founded in 1989. Those players have collectively earned over $8.8 million in college scholarships. Additionally, 40+ alumni have gone on to play professionally at various levels. The club has won 14 national indoor championships and 50+ state championships. These outcomes reflect a long-term development model rather than a short-term results focus.

What makes KC Legends different from other Kansas City soccer clubs?

Three things set KC Legends apart: (1) History and track record — founded in 1989, making it one of the longest-running youth soccer organizations in the Kansas City metro, with verified outcomes (400+ college alumni, $8.8M scholarships, 40+ pros); (2) Full pathway from age 2 to U19 under one roof, including HappyFeet, recreational, and elite competitive programs; (3) The Legends Method — a development philosophy that prioritizes individual skill mastery, creative play, and character development over early specialization and win-first mentality. Players are coached to think, not just execute.

Tryouts & Registration

When are KC Legends tryouts for the 2026 season?

KC Legends holds tryouts annually, typically in May and June for the fall season. 2026 season tryouts are scheduled — visit kclegends.com/tryouts for current dates, age group sessions, and registration links. We recommend registering in advance as sessions fill quickly. Players who cannot attend the primary tryout dates may request an evaluation at an alternative session by contacting us at info@kclegends.com.

What should my child bring to tryouts?

Players should arrive in appropriate soccer attire: cleats (outdoor field), shin guards, a water bottle, and athletic clothing. Do not wear game jerseys or club gear from another organization during tryouts. Players should arrive 10 minutes early, be well-rested, and eat a light meal beforehand. Parents are welcome to watch from the designated spectator area. Tryouts are run by our coaching staff and last approximately 90 minutes per session.

Is there a no-cut policy?

Yes. KC Legends will not cut any player from the club. We hold evaluations each year, but all players who attend receive placement on an appropriate-level team. Teams realign yearly to ensure every player has a positive developmental experience at their current level. Our philosophy is that every child deserves quality coaching regardless of talent level — the Legends pathway has room for everyone.

How is playing time handled?

KC Legends believes in equal playing time for all players who consistently attend practice. We do not use a bench system where some players sit while others play the full game. Our coaches view unequal playing time as unfair and counterproductive to development — players improve by playing, not watching. Every child who shows up to practice earns the right to play.

How much does it cost to play at KC Legends?

Costs vary by program. HappyFeet and Jr. Legends sessions are typically priced per session or semester and range from $99–$199. Recreational leagues and 4v4 programs range from $75–$150 per season. Club Premiere and Elite64 involve annual club fees, which cover coaching, training, and league registration — contact the office at (913) 851-9898 or info@kclegends.com for current competitive team pricing. Additional costs for competitive players include travel, tournaments, and uniforms. Financial assistance and payment plans are available.

What happens if my child does not make a team?

Not making a competitive team is not the end of the road. Our staff will provide specific feedback after tryouts so players understand what to work on. In the meantime, KC Legends' recreational leagues and 4v4 programs continue to run year-round and are open to all skill levels. Many players who were not initially selected at tryouts returned the following season after a year of focused development and earned roster spots. The Maestro skills training program is specifically designed to accelerate individual improvement between tryout cycles.

Training & Facilities

Where does KC Legends train?

KC Legends operates primarily out of its headquarters at 9701 W 67th St, Merriam, KS 66203. The club also runs programming at satellite locations in the Northland (Kansas City, MO) and Lee's Summit, MO, making it accessible to families across the Kansas City metro. The Merriam facility serves as the home base for competitive team training, Elite64, goalkeeper training, and Maestro Academy sessions.

Is the facility indoor or outdoor?

The Merriam headquarters includes both indoor and outdoor training areas. The indoor facility supports year-round training regardless of weather and hosts box soccer, futsal-style sessions, and Maestro skills training. Outdoor fields are used for full-sided training and match preparation. This dual setup allows KC Legends to run a complete training calendar without seasonal interruptions — a key advantage for player development continuity.

What is the Legends Skills Academy?

The Legends Skills Academy is an ancillary training program offered at no additional cost to KC Legends members. It provides extra training sessions that supplement team practices, or serves as an alternative when a player misses a team session. The Academy focuses on dribbling, finishing, mental attitude, confidence, elite teamwork, leadership, coordination, agility, endurance, and individual skill development. Signup is flexible — one month at a time with no long-term commitment.

How do you handle positional play?

KC Legends develops utility players capable of playing multiple positions. We position players much later than other youth clubs because our focus is on maximizing the abilities of each individual, not winning games. Young players rotate through every position so they understand the full game. This approach produces well-rounded, adaptable players who can contribute anywhere on the field — a quality highly valued by college coaches.

How often do teams practice?

Practice frequency depends on the program level. Recreational and 4v4 players typically practice once per week plus games. Club Premiere teams practice 2–3 times per week depending on age group. Elite64 teams practice 3–4 times per week and may include additional individual sessions. All competitive team schedules are set by the head coach and communicated at the start of each season. Players are expected to prioritize all scheduled sessions as consistent attendance is a key component of development.

What leagues do KC Legends teams play in?

KC Legends teams compete in multiple leagues depending on level: Club Premiere teams play in Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) and Kansas Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) sanctioned leagues, as well as regional tournaments. Elite64 teams compete at the highest regional and national levels, including ECNL Regional League, US Club Soccer, and national tournaments. Recreational and 4v4 leagues are run internally by KC Legends and do not require travel beyond the metro area.

For Parents

How can parents get involved?

KC Legends encourages parent involvement at the right level. Parents are welcome to volunteer as team managers, help coordinate travel logistics, and support club events and fundraisers. However, coaching and technical feedback during training and games is the exclusive domain of our licensed coaching staff — this is intentional and protects the player's development. The best thing a parent can do during a game is cheer positively and let the coaches coach. The KC Legends parent guide is available on our website and outlines expectations clearly.

What is the coaching philosophy at KC Legends?

KC Legends coaches follow the Legends Method, which is rooted in four principles: (1) player-centered development — the player's long-term growth takes priority over short-term results; (2) technical mastery first — players must be able to control the ball before they can execute tactics; (3) creative freedom — players are encouraged to try things, fail, and problem-solve rather than follow rigid systems; (4) character development — every session includes moments that build discipline, resilience, and teamwork. Coaches hold USSF and UEFA licenses and participate in ongoing professional development.

How does KC Legends develop character alongside soccer skills?

Character development is embedded in the KC Legends culture, not added on top of it. The club’s tagline — "Developing Brave, Creative Leaders On and Off the Field" — reflects a genuine commitment to producing people, not just players. Coaches model and reinforce values like accountability, effort, respect for opponents, and grace in both winning and losing. Senior players are expected to mentor younger players. The environments in training and at tournaments are deliberately structured to present challenges that require resilience and problem-solving.

What is the scholarship track record?

Since 1989, KC Legends alumni have collectively earned over $8.8 million in college soccer scholarships. More than 400 alumni have gone on to play college soccer at D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and junior college levels. Over 40 players have reached the professional level. The club maintains an active college placement network and coaches provide guidance to families navigating the recruiting process, including connecting with college coaches, creating highlight reels, and understanding NCAA eligibility requirements.
