Our Philosophy

A development methodology 35 years in the making. Built on principles that put the player first — and let results take care of themselves.

The Legends Method

Founder Andy Barney spent decades refining a coaching approach that rejects the common tradeoff between winning now and developing players for the long term. The Legends Method holds that these goals are not in conflict — but only if you commit to developing individuals first.

The methodology is detailed in Andy's book, "Training Soccer Legends," which has been used by coaches across the country. It covers technical progression, session design, the philosophy of equal playing time, and the mental framework coaches need to develop elite-level players from grassroots beginnings.

Core Principles

Five commitments that define how we coach, train, and develop every player at every level of the club.

1

Development Over Winning

At KC Legends, the scoreboard is never the primary measure of success. We evaluate our program by the quality of players we produce and the character they develop — outcomes that outlast any single season.

2

Individual Skill Mastery

Before a player can contribute to a team, they must master the ball. Our training emphasizes individual technical work — first touch, dribbling under pressure, shooting, and 1v1 defending — so that every player owns a complete skill set.

3

Creative and Deceptive Play

We teach players to be unpredictable. The Legends Method places a heavy emphasis on deceptive dribbling and creative decision-making, producing players who can break down defenses through skill rather than just athleticism or system.

4

Equal Playing Time

Every player deserves to play. Especially at younger age groups, we believe equal playing time is non-negotiable. Players cannot develop on the bench. This commitment is part of what makes the Legends pathway work over the long run.

5

Character Development

Soccer is a vehicle. We use it to teach grit, accountability, resilience, and teamwork. Our coaching staff is trained to coach the whole player — not just their feet. The habits built on the training field follow players for life.

“If you teach the players, the game will teach itself. Give a child the technical tools to express themselves on the field, and then get out of their way. That is how you build a Legend.”

— Andy Barney, Founder, Kansas City Legends Soccer Club
